[New] Lady Vengeance ~ Juliette Has a Gun: More On Why It’s A Cult-Favourite

Juliette Has a Gun has established itself as a niche fragrance line known for its coveted scents, intriguing labels with unexpected ingredients and underlying twists. To the bystander – she is docile, yet provocative. But for Romano Ricci, the founder of this fragrance house — Juliette is envisioned as a fascinating young woman, both valiant and endearing. And the gun, as is symbolically referred to in his fragrances, is Juliette’s secret weapon of temptation. Today on Sahar Reviews, we’ll be sharing our first impressions on the Lady Vengeance perfume from Juliette Has a Gun collection.

Design & Aesthetics

It follows the take on Romano Ricci’s signature design except this time, the bottle is coloured matte black with the motif of black roses and the name of the perfume, ‘Lady Vengeance’ painted in deep red across its front cover. The design is very elegant and mysterious, and I must admit, although I didn’t know what to expect from a rose-centered fragrance that is presented in solid black colours, just knowing that the maestro Francis Kurkdjian was the nose behind the perfume, I knew I had to give it a try!

Fragrance Notes

Top notes: Bergamot, Lavender
Middle notes: Bulgarian rose, Moroccan rose, Patchouli, Iso E Super, Geranium
Base notes: White Musk, Ambroxan, Vanilla

How does it smell?

Contrary to its dark, mysterious and gothic re-presentation, it’s actually a sweet, romantic, soft and a very sensual fragrance.

After I misted some on to my wrist, the first thing that came to my mind was, how can a fragrance that is seemingly so simple, elude such depth and elegance? Lady Vengeance is essentially rounded on two main notes: rose and patchouli. But what brings life to this fragrance is that the rose in LV is fresh, light, dewy and airy, if I may call it so. While in contrast, the patchouli is rather dry, earthy and musky. So it’s more like a marriage of fresh/bright and dry/dark accords, merging at a perfect meeting point to compliment one another.

On application, it opens up with a blast of sparkling bergamot, interlaced with subtle hints of herbal lavender that is generously supported with sweet Bulgarian roses. Although the Bulgarian and Morrocan roses are listed as middle notes, you can feel them through out, from the first spritz all the way until it dries down.

Moving ahead, once the opening notes settle down, the rose takes full control. Onwards, the rose becomes more soapy, powdery soft, and sweet (but never overly sweet). And as time goes by, the sensual trio of ambroxan, vanilla and musk brings to this fragrance its multifaceted charm.

This is super versatile: suitable for all seasons and all occasions. It’s perfect for the spring and summer, although it’s more suited for your evening usage – especially, if like me, you’re based in Dubai.

My experience has been great with it. Although it remains fairly linear, the complexity of the rose and it’s combination with patchouli, ambroxan and vanilla develops beautifully over the course of its application. It’s been over 7+ hours and I’m still getting wafts of it from an arm’s length. Both projection and longevity are impressive.

Final Verdict

Lady Vengeance stands for seduction, sensuality and lust, and it delivers it in a signature Kurkdjian style.

Overall, this is a gorgeous rose fragrance! If like me, you’re obsessed with rose-patchouli scents, then LV will be a fascinating treat for you to discover. To my nose it smells vaguely like L’Artisan’s Voleur de Roses with some familiar nuances of Czech & Speake’s No 88, though the latter is more earthy, dusky and masculine.

So, if you’re looking for a rose/patchouli/vanilla fragrance where the rose is slightly soapy, spicy and powdery, then this might be the fragrance you are looking for.
