Dermalogica’s NEW Phyto-Nature Firming Serum!

Dermalogica have revealed an exciting new product from the AGE Smart® range that promises to reawaken the nature of younger looking skin. Phyto-Nature Firming Serum, in essence combines highly-active botanicals with biomimetic technology to reduce visible signs of skin ageing.

Research suggests that 80% of our skin damage is caused by exposome factors, while genetic factors account for only 20% of skin aging.

To understand better, let’s consider your skin as an interface between the internal and the external world. The term “exposome” has therefore been proposed as a measure of the effects of environmental and social exposures on the body and/or specific organs throughout its lifespan. In skincare however, studying the link between such ‘exposures’ and how it affects the genome (i.e, our genetic material) can help scientists’ decode the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms affecting the skin’s health. This information will also help establish a daily beauty regimen that combines ingredients of proven efficacy against such exposome factors.

While it is nearly impossible to eliminate all potential aggressors, what we could do however, is to strengthen the skin’s barrier or its immune system. Interestingly, while reading more about the Phyto-Nature Firming serum, my attention was immediately drawn to the list of ingredients. I couldn’t help but notice the presence of several skin-replenishing ingredients in there, which I’ve tried to summarize below, based on its functions.

Ingredients breakdown

Antioxidant: Myrciaria Dubia (Amazonian Camu Camu), Cistus Monspeliensis (Moroccan Rockrose Extract), Curcuma Longa (Turmeric), Safflower Oil, Ubiquinone, Tocopherol, Caffeyl Glucoside, Astragalus (Huang Qi) Root Extract.

Cellular Communicators/ Peptides: Trifluoroacetyl Tripeptide-2

Skin Hydrating Ingredient: Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycerin

How it works

Aside from all the bio-active botanicals, it is also infused with hyaluronic acid and peptides (which act as a signal for collagen synthesis). In scientific literature, there’s plenty of evidence on how peptides can promote skin rejuvenation. Moving on to the product, the dual-phase (hydric and lipidic) formula of the serum works in two main ways.

In the firming phase, sapphire-bound peptides reinforce cutaneous defense mechanisms while simultaneously boosting skin regeneration.

The lifting phase on the other hand, uses bio-active ingredients, like the Moroccan rockrose extract and camu camu to deliver antioxidant protection and restore skin firmness.

Phyto-Nature Firming Serum contains a concentrated blend of four botanical extracts. While it is suitable for all skin types—those with dry, dull, mature skin will benefit the most from its revitalizing and ‘lifting’ effects.

How to use

Right after cleansing and toning, dispense 1 – 2 pumps of the serum into your palms. Then mix the two serums before applying it to your face and neck. This part might be a bit confusing since you can’t really differentiate between the two serums.

You can then follow it up with your routine moisturizer. While Dermalogica recommends using it both during the day and in the evenings, I would consider it more suitable for your night time routine, especially if you have combination or oily skin. The 40 ml bottle lasts about sixty applications, which should take you through 2 months, considering you use it once daily.

The final verdict

So for the last three weeks, I have been using two pumps–worth of this serum on my skin at night. The serum has an orange-brown colour, a faint medicinal scent (which I don’t mind) and despite the thick consistency, it absorbs quickly. Does it work? Well, I’ve noticed the texture of my skin becoming smoother and my complexion becoming brighter and more uniform. So, yes I do see subtle changes over time. However, I can not attest nor refute the lifting and ‘wrinkle filling’ claims made by the brand. In all, this is an innovative product with an impressive blend of ingredients which are backed by copious research. After three weeks of using, it leaves my skin feeling plump and glowing.

For a complete anti aging routine, you may consider adding retinol (click here to read all about retinols) and a Vitamin C serum —thereby increasing its anti-ageing benefits!

The Phyto-Nature Firming Serum retails at a price of AED 647. For more skincare related reviews, click here.
