Lately, many brands are using the label “natural” or “organic” on their products, but are lacking the appropriate certification to confirm their commitment to this cause.

Therefore, as a consumer, if you are looking into a specific niche such as organic or natural skincare, always run your own investigation. Make sure you check the brand’s website thoroughly, read through the product labels and always look for the USDA certifications before making any purchases. So, what are toners?

Toners are water-based formulations that not only nourishes, but also restores balance to your skin. Depending on the formula, it may include a combination of antioxidants, skin-restoring and cell-communicating ingredients.

When applied to your skin after cleansing, it even increases the efficacy and absorption of your other skincare products. Another way you could use it, is just spritz it on anytime during the day for a quick hydration boost.

Not all toners are equal

It’s important to keep in mind that not all organic toners are created equal. In fact, there are some terribly formulated ones, especially those that contain alcohol, or more commonly referred to, as the “bad” alcohol. These include ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, alcohol denat, methanol.

Overall, toners formulated with these alcohols will have greater tendency to cause irritation, redness and dryness.

How to choose a toner?

Choosing the right toner depends on your skin type. But overall, the key is to seek out formulas that are non-irritating, alcohol-free and enriched with skin-boosting and hydrating ingredients. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, you should look for organic toners with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, rosewater, and aloe.

Contrary to popular belief, toners do little to reduce oil production.

So instead of using astringent toners for this purpose, which can potentially wreak havoc on your skin and throw off the pH balance, it’s advisable to make simple changes to your skincare routine. In fact, alcohol based toners can further stimulate oil production.

How to use the toner?

Most toners have are watery texture that aids in both the application and absorption. To apply it on the skin, use a cotton ball and gently sweep it around the face, neck, and decolleté; being careful to avoid the eye area. You can use it twice daily to prep up your skin post-cleansing. Once applied, follow it up with the serum of your choice and moisturizer.
